- No mandatory additional training — fellowship qualifies (~9,600 QLD GPs)
- Paediatricians now also authorised for young adults 18-24

Which ADHD Medications Can QLD GPs Prescribe?
Specialist Queensland GPs (FRACGP/FACRRM) can prescribe the following PBS-listed stimulant medications for adult ADHD patients. Real-time prescription monitoring applies.
Methylphenidate
Available in immediate-release and extended-release formulations. PBS-listed for ADHD with appropriate authority prescribing. First-line treatment option for adult ADHD.
Lisdexamfetamine
Long-acting prodrug stimulant with once-daily dosing. PBS-listed for ADHD with appropriate authority prescribing. Smooth onset and duration, lower abuse potential than other stimulants.
Non-stimulant medications (e.g. atomoxetine) can be prescribed by GPs in all states with fewer restrictions. Always verify current PBS listings and authority requirements.

Common Questions About GP ADHD Prescribing in Queensland
Can my GP prescribe ADHD medication in Queensland?
Yes. Since 1 December 2025, specialist GPs holding FRACGP or FACRRM fellowship can initiate, modify, and continue stimulant prescriptions (methylphenidate, lisdexamfetamine) for adult ADHD patients aged 18 and over. Approximately 9,600 QLD GPs qualify. A comprehensive DSM-5 clinical assessment is required before initiating treatment. Real-time prescription monitoring applies. Paediatricians are also now authorised for young adults aged 18-24. For children aged 4-17, all doctors can continue prescribing as before.
What training do QLD GPs need to prescribe ADHD medication?
There is no mandatory additional training requirement. GPs who hold FRACGP or FACRRM fellowship are already qualified to prescribe under the new authorisations. Voluntary upskilling is available through RACGP CPD modules and a HealthCert short course, but these are not prerequisites. The reforms are governed under the Medicines and Poisons Act 2019.
Can a QLD GP prescribe Vyvanse?
Yes. Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is one of the PBS-listed stimulant medications that specialist Queensland GPs can prescribe for adult ADHD patients. Along with methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta), these are the primary stimulant options available through the GP prescribing pathway in Queensland. Real-time prescription monitoring applies to all stimulant prescriptions.
Do I need a psychiatrist for ADHD in Queensland?
Not necessarily for adults. Since 1 December 2025, specialist GPs holding FRACGP or FACRRM fellowship can diagnose and prescribe ADHD stimulant medication for adult patients aged 18+ without requiring a psychiatrist referral. Paediatricians are also now authorised for young adults aged 18-24. For children aged 4-17, all doctors can continue prescribing as before. Many adults who previously faced 6-18 month specialist wait times can now access assessment and treatment through their GP.
Can children get ADHD medication from a GP in Queensland?
Yes. All doctors in Queensland can continue prescribing ADHD medication for children aged 4-17 as before the reforms. Paediatricians are also now authorised to prescribe for young adults aged 18-24, bridging the gap between paediatric and adult care. This maintains continuity of treatment for young people transitioning to adult services.
How much does an ADHD assessment cost at a GP in Queensland?
A GP ADHD assessment in Queensland is typically covered under Medicare (bulk-billed or with a gap payment of $40-$90), compared to a private psychiatrist assessment which costs $400-$800+ out-of-pocket. GP assessments may require longer appointments (30-60 minutes) which attract a higher Medicare item number. Using a validated digital assessment tool like ClientForms means patients complete the detailed questionnaire before the appointment, making the GP consultation more efficient.
